Changing your physique is difficult, but it’s only half of the battle.

Developing a healthy mindset is a huge hurdle for most to overcome.

How do you view yourself? Do you love your body for what it looks like, or for what it can do?

Huge shoutout to Flex client @missjanefit, coached by @deanmckillop, for such awesome progress. Here’s what she had to say: ‘The last 6 months of moving into a more performance based mode of training has taught me to truly enjoy my body for whatever it looks like. I don’t even THINK about my body from an aesthetic point of view anymore. I’ve finally come to a place where I respect myself, love myself, and can REMOVE EMOTION from my physical appearance’. It is great to be proud of how you look, but that is just one aspect of it.

Are you proud of who you are?

Soreness is not a predictor of muscle growth

Rather, soreness is an indicator of damage or disruption, with coinciding inflammation

Now... You are probably thinking that damage is necessary for growth, but that in itself is also not completely true

Growth occurs due to the necessity to adapt and survive

Adaptation, in the form of muscle growth, is largely determined more by the load and mechanical tension placed on the muscle over time in a progressive manner

Muscle grows due to stimulation, not being damaged specifically

With that in mind, soreness can easily be achieved by simply shifting the type of stimulus

Just like being punched in the arm however, that foreign stimulus and ensuing soreness, is nothing but an indicator of damage

It’s not an indicator or muscle hypertrophy

So... what does this mean?

It means you shouldn’t be chasing pain or soreness specifically, but rather, you should be chasing progression

If soreness comes as a result of that, fine, but don’t focus on it being a necessity

How to maximise your return on investment with coaching?

Our responsibility as coaches is to make calculated decisions based on the progress and feedback provided by clients each week, to help them get closer to their goal as well as to educate and help them learn in the process so they can not only apply the knowledge but also pass it on to other people.

Coaching is an investment so maximise your return by taking action, being accountable, and committing to the change necessary to achieve your goals.

Here we have Daniel and his body composition progress over the time he’s been with us so far. He weighs the same in both photos, and it’s safe to say he’s made some pretty damn good improvements. However, what these photos don’t show is the amount of effort and commitment that he’s put into learning and maximising his investment from coaching.

He nails the basics well, fills out progress tracking files and feedback forms in great details, and he asks questions every week. He didn’t just want to get told what to do but rather learn how things work. The old saying “give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” rings true in this case.

He takes education seriously and has taken on many courses to up-skill and now he’s a trainer himself, and started helping other people to share the message.

This is what coaching should be!
